Summary

In Chapter 1, narrated by Fallon, Fallon has invited her father, the acting star Donovan O’Neil, to lunch to tell him she will be moving from Los Angeles to New York in hopes of getting an acting job on Broadway. Donovan is bragging about being a father again. His significantly younger girlfriend is pregnant. Fallon tells him that being a father means more than getting a girl pregnant. Fallon does not believe her father has been a good father to her since her acting career fell apart when she was 16.

Fallon is aggravated when their waiter recognizes her father as an actor and asks Fallon to take their picture. Instead, Fallon suggests they take a selfie. She leaves the table and goes to the restroom.
