Summary
Chapter Forty-Six is narrated by Guy as he breaks out into laughter during a large meeting William is holding. He thinks back onto a joke that had been several days in the making and launches into a flashback. A few days ago, Simon Fitzsimon and Guy had gotten drunk together and discovered de Lacy had lied to Simon about Guy being the one who had decided to use criminals in the Guard. Guy realizes that they had been trying to depose him from the beginning. Guy returns to the present, with William ordering him to guard the city instead of attending de Lacy's funeral. Guy sees that he would be blamed if Locksley attacked the funeral and it would destroy his credibility with the other lords.
