Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Ruth Bader Ginsburg (née Joan Ruth Bader) was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1933. She was raised by two Jewish immigrant parents, who left Europe to flee from oppression. Her mother consistently encouraged her to work hard in school. Ginsburg was a hard-working, intelligent student. She attended Cornell University for her undergraduate studies. She began dating fellow student Martin “Marty” Ginsburg, and they married in 1954. They had their first child in 1955, and Ginsburg worked in public bureaucracy for two years. Ginsburg and her husband both enrolled in Harvard Law School. After Marty graduated, he found a job working in a tax law firm in New York City. Ginsburg transferred to Columbia Law School to complete the final year of her degree in New York City. Due to gender discrimination, Ginsburg had difficulty finding a job after finishing law school.
