Summary
Chapter 10 begins in 2009. When Barack Obama was inaugurated to the Presidency, the Senate was majority Democratic. People expected Ginsburg to retire and make room for a progressive successor. However, Ginsburg remained on the Court and remained dedicated to her work. Some feared that if Ginsburg passed away or retired in ill health during a Republican presidential administration, then she would be replaced by a highly conservative Justice. Ginsburg refused to retire, and she subtly expressed hope that the President after Obama would be progressive female. The book then shifts ahead to 2015, when the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges. The Court’s ruling declared that bans on same-sex marriage were unconstitutional. At the time of this book’s publication, Ginsburg remained on the Court and continued with determination to advocate for progressive ideals and civil rights.
