Summary
Mae’s mother stops speaking to her. Mae—who has dropped out of school to work for Warhol—feels herself “separating… from the apartment” (83). At the Factory, Mae completes typing tasks for Anita and observes the many hangers-on (artists, actors, and models) who spend time there. Shelley shows a “gentle authority” (84) as she works on a separate project. Mae notes that Shelley is confident and assured, even though she lacks the attractiveness of Warhol’s followers. When Warhol visits the studio, Mae senses “the atmosphere change” (86).
One evening, Anita dictates a letter to Mae “asking someone’s parents for money” (88). Anita tells her that many of the people in the studio come from wealth. After work, Shelley and Mae go to a tea-room together. Shelley tells Mae that she once overheard Anita and her boyfriend—a married man—having phone sex. When Mae...
