Summary
In 2010, Mae occasionally visits New York, often frequenting art galleries. One day, she sees Maud and her husband outside a museum. She and Maud eventually have lunch together. During the meal, Mae briefly fantasizes about a newfound friendship between them. Maud confesses to having had a crush on Mikey, who is now dead. Maud apologizes to Mae, admitting that she “wasn’t a good friend” (51). Mae, in turn, apologizing for mysteriously leaving school.
In 1966, after the encounter with Daniel, Mae’s home life “began to seem like a snapshot from the past” (53). Her relationship with her mother grows more tense and hostile. Mae goes to the doctor to whom Daniel’s mother referred her. A young woman in the waiting room ominously tells Mae to “make him wait for it… he likes the tease” (56).
