Friendship
Despite the backstabbing and gossip that goes on in the book - in fact, partially because of it - friendship ends up being one of Nothing Can Keep Us Together's main themes. In spite of the disparate backgrounds and social status of the various characters, the one major unifying force in the book is friendship. Many of the characters have a long history with other characters in the novel, some of which is only implied. Nevertheless, Serena and Blair's friendship in crisis draws the reader's attention towards the depth of this friendship in the first place, and how long the two of them have known each other. In fact, they are so similar on a certain level that they separately end up choosing the exact same dress for graduation.
