Agnes

Agnes is the narrator of the novel. She is a seventh-grade student. She seems to have a mean streak that comes out when Gerda convinces her to give up her sandals; in order to get back at her, she befriends her with the sole purpose of determining what would hurt her most to give up. She practically makes her give up her hamster as a result. She seems more world-weary than some of the other students and more amenable to what Pierre says.

Over the course of events in the novel, Agnes positions herself as a somewhat passive observer to what is going on around her. She seems to go back and forth on whether or not she fully believes what Pierre is saying, but she mostly only goes along with the project because it is something to do.
