Summary
In Chapter 6, "Fall 1990, Fifth Form," Crawford was assigned a dorm away from most of her friends. She became close with a girl named Elise who lived in the same building.
Overwhelmed by sports and classwork, Crawford eventually dropped honors calculus. For English, she took "Modern Novel with Mr. Katzenbach" (144). His class opened the world of literature to her.
Crawford started helping one of her classmates in her lower level calc class, Brophy, with his homework. One of Brophy's teammates, Rick, suggested she help him, too. Then one night Rick called her on the dormitory phone. He repeatedly implored her for help, saying it was not about calculus. Crawford thought he was crying, and believed he needed emotional support his girlfriend could not give him. Crawford says she found "a way to make this make sense," and snuck out to his dorm (153).
