Summary
While Zanzuri seethed about the lack of gum, the second patrol jeep, which had a mute man driving it and the officer in the passenger seat, veered off the road and hit an elderly Arab man. The jeeps stopped near the injured Arab, and Stein grabbed the mute, scolding him for his actions. The Russian soldier then told Stein that the mute “didn’t run over a human being” (78), just an Arab. The Russian’s bad breath almost caused Stein to start crying.
The officer interrupted and ordered the Russian and Zanzuri to inspect a building where an Arab man might have been hiding. The soldiers scouted the building and returned with a captured Arab man, whom they had tied up and gagged. The mute beat the Arab man after pretending to bend down.
