Summary
The ninth chapter is titled “Cook Camp.” Leif again travels across the main channel to an island. This one is large, but Leif hopes there will not be any bears. He chooses a cove on the north with a trickling stream. He pulls the canoe far out of the water to let it dry out some. He gathers firewood and finds an old mouse nest for tinder. A heavy fog makes everything damp and he struggles to build a fire. He has a good fire by the time sprinkling rain begins. He uses long willow limbs to lean over the fire, adding crosspieces to make a drying rack. He begins to clean the fish.
