Summary

The fifth chapter is titled “Whale Song.” Birds wake Leif the next morning. He is very hungry and relieved to realize he does not have to worry about bears while on this island. He ensures the fire is completely out, loads up his possessions, and launches the canoe. He begins to travel along the coast, looking or “a place where a heavy stream or small river came out into the sea and left a gravel bar covered with brush and willows” (61). He travels into and inlet and finds the perfect place. He finds thick blackberry bushes hanging over the water and begins to eat. Once he is no longer starving, he slows down but keeps eating.
