Summary
Perry wakes to find he has slept for less than an hour. He speaks with Carla about his situation and about her husband, and he soon falls asleep again. In the morning, Perry skis towards the nearest town. He stops at a gas station, where a woman allows him to use a telephone. He talks to the police but is unable to reach Grace. A man in the gas station says he had searched for Perry and Harvey. He calls Perry “stupid” (310) and says that he “was just awful lucky” (308). Perry gets mildly drunk and a policeman brings him back to Sawmill Landing. When he sees Grace, Perry “let her kiss him, then he kissed her cheek” (312). He reveals that Harvey has been rescued and taken to a hospital by helicopter. He tells Grace, “I don’t really want to explain it all...
