Summary
Perry, Harvey, Grace, and Addie arrive to a festive atmosphere at their hotel in Grand Marais. After Grace falls asleep, Perry joins Harvey and Grace at a bar. He flirts half-heartedly with a young woman. At dawn, Harvey wakes Perry and brings him to his and Addie’s room. Harvey and Addie, both drunk, have met a young Olympic skier named Daniel. In the morning, Grace, Addie, and Perry watch the ski races. Harvey, preparing for his own race, remarks to Perry that “we’re bloody adults now” (146). He confesses that he plans to propose to Addie. Later, Daniel easily wins the race; Perry, having fallen, finishes last.
The next day, Perry sees Addie kiss Daniel. Harvey is bitter and unhappy. In the evening, Perry meets Addie and Daniel in the hotel lobby. Addie, admitting that “I’m being nasty” (155), tells Perry that...
