Summary

In the section Two Days Later (April 2011), Connell visits his grandmother in the hospital with Lorraine. Connell considers his origin, how disinterested he is in finding out who his father is. The fact that Lorraine has never told him does not bother him. He does not envy the father issues of his friends and peers. Earlier, Marianne tells him she thinks he is a good person, which comforts him. At the hospital, his grandmother asks him about his plans to attend Trinity. He does not admit the decision has to do with Marianne.

Connell thinks about having told Marianne he loves her, unsure it is true. He wishes he knew how other people behaved. The following morning, he and Marianne wake up at Connell's house, having accidentally fallen asleep. Just getting home from work, Lorraine sees...
