Why does Thunberg use such plain language in each of her speeches?
Thunberg argues that the climate crisis is simple, and therefore must be discussed in simple language. She believes that clouding or disguising the issue with deceptive political or journalistic language risks furthering the problem. She often suggests that public ignorance is attributable to politicians' longtime belief that the science behind the crisis is too complicated for the masses to understand. Thunberg actively enacts the opposite, stripping the scientific data and the global history of climate abuse down to elemental syntactic structures. Instead of hiding behind the same euphemisms other voices have used to discuss, or dismiss, the crisis, Thunberg does the opposite, appealing to global and diverse audiences.
