Chapter Four - Five Summary
In Chapter four, the ghost of Susannah's father startles her in the kitchen. He has a message for her to stay away from Red Beaumont. Susannah's father's ghost watches over her, warning her about Jesse as well. "When my dad called me Susannah, he meant business," she said (p. 57). Susannah thought that her dad had already moved on. However, something is still keeping him from moving on to the other side.
After her father's ghost disappears, Susannah's mother steps into the kitchen, worriedly asking her daughter whether she said the word, "dad." "Back in New York she used to send me to her therapist, who told her I wasn't a mental case, just a teenager" (p. 59). Susannah thinks she fooled the doctor.
