Summary
In “Anita and Happiness,” Pablo hated his girlfriend Anita because “he couldn’t prove . . . she was an alien” (33). However, Pablo decided “to fall in love with her,” hoping to confirm what she was hiding (33). Even when he failed to prove his theory, he was convinced “there was something strange about Anita” (34).
Anita often spoke in odd, formal sentences, particularly when she wanted to have sex. This turned Pablo on (34). The longer he was with Anita, the more convinced he was she “was on a mission from another planet” (34). Although Pablo was in love, he often fantasized about stabbing Anita, convinced that doing so would prove his theory.
Over time, Anita’s “absences grew more frequent” (36). Finally one day she disappeared. Pablo believed “she’d returned to Planet X” (36). On the train one day, he saw a woman who resembled Anita...
