In Chapter 7, set in Los Angeles, Aimee tried to convince herself that her parents were not getting a divorce. However, her arguments to herself seemed to suggest the opposite. Her parents had been arguing a good deal more frequently. Aimee thought about the afternoon that she had helped her mother pick out her outfit for a job interview. She thought, perhaps, if she had not helped her mother that she would never have gotten a job in Los Angeles.

Chapter 8 is set in Brooklyn. Since Sergio was a black kid, he believed he had to cooperate with the man who had stopped him, who he believed was a police officer.
