The narrative takes place in Australia. This setting is important in a symbolic sense as it represents a negative life-change in the lives of the prisoners who were sent there. However, some of these prisoners took charge of their own fate and unlocked their respective doors and became successful. It is important literally because Masha never adapted to Australians and is envious of them because she does not think they have had to suffer as she has. Her envy helps explain her treatment of the nine guests.
