The Asylum is symbolic of safety. When Papa first leaves ConaLee and Eliza here, their future looks uncertain. However, the unfamiliar environment soon offers them the protection that they need. The Asylum ushers them into a world beyond the pain they have suffered in the past and grants them the opportunity to remake their lives in the future.

ConaLee's mirror is symbolic of grounding. She carries the handheld mirror with her almost at all times. It becomes her talisman and grants her a sense of balance whenever she feels uncertain or afraid.

Dearbhla

Dearbhla's character is symbolic of spirituality. As a healer and seer, Dearbhla connects characters like ConaLee, Eliza, and O'Shea to the spiritual world. She particularly helps ConaLee to look at the world in a more complex manner, and thus gives her the emotional tools to transcend her pain and suffering.
