Summary
In Part 1, “1874," “ConaLee: A Journey, April 1874,” a man who called himself Papa loaded ConaLee and Mama, ConaLee’s mother Eliza, into the carriage. He tied a rope between his and Eliza’s ankles. As they drove away from home, he told ConaLee what to do and how to behave. Mama was now Miss Janet, “a quality woman alone in the world” and ConaLee, who he called Connolly, was her attendant (4). Papa was taking them to a supposed hotel for quality women to rest. ConaLee was sad to leave home, Mama’s other babies, and her granny neighbor, Dearbhla, but assumed she would return (5)
