Summary
In the prologue, Sheriff Arthur Smith and Officer Anna Gomez are in Midnight to investigate the death of a man who has committed suicide in the middle of the crossroad. They interview the clerk at the Midnight Hotel, Mariana Desoto, who saw the man get out of the car as if he were drunk, walk to the crossroad and kill himself.
In Chapter 1, the town's residents, with the exception of Teacher and Madonna Reed, gather to discuss the suicide. Lem informs them that this is not the first suicide. A homeless woman committed suicide in the same place a week ago. Fiji remembers her. The lady had peed outside her house. Bobo suggests that magic has something to do with the suicides and Chuy says that the ghosts, whom he and Joe can see, have been acting strangely, too. They urge Lem...
