Part IV, Chapter 40-63 Summary

Villon meets with Brian Shaw who tells him about the treaty that will result in all of Canada belonging to the United States. There are few traces of the treaty's existence because all references were destroyed. Villon says the Americans have the proper authorization for their expedition and can't be ordered out of Canadian water.

Giordino is with the expedition to find the train wreck. As they are setting up their equipment on the ship, they hear a train whistle. They check the map and find the nearest track is two to twelve miles away and the whistle is less than one mile. As they stared at the abutment, the approaching train whistle suddenly ends.
