Obsession

Obsession is a key theme in Night Prey. The main obsession is obviously that of Robert Koop. Koop, as he is known in the novel, discovers Sara Jensen, an executive at a financial firm, when he burgles her apartment. Though Koop is an accomplished cat burglar, he is for some reason infatuated with Jensen; it is an infatuation that will result in his ultimate downfall.

Koop appears to suffer from a sense of obsessive love, insatiably longing for Sara Jensen, with an unreasonable preoccupation about her. Koop's obsession triggers an urge for release, causing him to kill women in order to make up for the distance he feels from Sara.

Koop's obsession is ultimately his downfall. Though Robert Koop has been killing women for years, gaining sexual gratification from overpowering and conquering women that he feels judged by, there has never been such a personal stake in things...
