Summary

While his mother, whom he calls Mom, busies herself with setting up their new house, David relaxes on the couch and eats a bowl of cereal. Mom insists that he take it easy since he has recently been sick. David finishes his cereal and contemplates Mom’s new haircut, wondering when she had time to get it done. David and Mom have recently relocated to Panawahpskek Nation, leaving David’s father, Dad, and his sister, Paige, at their home further south. David loses an alien figurine while playing near the steps to the house, and when he looks between the slats to try and find it he notices a glass jar filled with hair, corn, and teeth. David calls out to Mom, who is initially dismissive but eventually comes to look at the jar. She drops it in the snow and ushers...
