John Corey
A self-described "skeptic, cynic, realist, and bubble-burster," the novel's protagonist John Corey is a former New York City homicide detective who is now working for the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force as a homicide specialist. Corey is married to his second wife Kate Mayfield, an FBI lawyer. John Corey is a jaded, politically incorrect, cynical cop with a sarcastic wit. He drinks heavily, likes to watch the X-files, likes to tell jokes about terrorist Arabs and women with PMS and is a self-described troublemaker. Although John is jaded and cynical at the beginning of his investigation into the crash, he rediscovers a sense of purpose throughout the story, as he becomes more determined to find out what happened for the sake of the crash's victims and their families.
