Chapter 44 Summary
John drives to the Winslows' house. He parks his car there at 2:17 a.m. and waits there until the next morning, Sunday September 9, 2001. At 5:29 a.m., John calls Sergeant Roberts. He instructs him to call Mark Winslow at 6:30 and tell him that the prowler has been caught, so Winslow can feel free to go golfing. At 6:45, Mark Winslow's Mercedes pulls out of his driveway and drives past where John's car is parked. John waits until 7:32 and then walks up to the Winslow house and rings the doorbell.
Chapter 44 Analysis
John is finally to going to get some answers about the night of the crash from Jill Winslow. The reader's curiosity builds, and the use of short chapters that end just at the brink of an important event continues to build suspense.
