Chapter 6 Summary

Kate tells John that she has a witness that she wants him to interview, and she directs him to go to the lookout tower on the top floor of the Coast Guard station, where someone will be waiting for him. When John gets to the lookout tower, he is met by Tom Spruck, a former navy officer and pilot who flew missions in Vietnam. Tom tells John that the night of the crash he was out sailing around in his Sunfish. At 8:30 that night, he noticed a streak of light rising rapidly from the ocean at a steep angle. Tom tells John that he knows what he saw was a surface-to-air missile. He explains that he saw many of these in combat and definitely knows what they look like. Tom relates that he was first interviewed by Kate just after the crash, but...
