Chapter 2 Summary
On July 19, 2001, exactly five years after TWA Flight 800 exploded over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all onboard the plane, the families and friends of the dead have gathered on the fifth year anniversary of the crash to pay their respects. John Corey, who used to be a New York City detective and who is now employed by the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force, drives out to Long Island for the yearly beachside memorial service with his second wife Kate Mayfield, who is a lawyer and FBI agent. Kate has investigated the crash by primarily interviewing witnesses who saw the explosion, and she goes back to this service every year. As they arrive at the service, John thinks to himself that it's too bad that no one caught the crash on tape.
