Maurice Hearne
Maurice Hearne is the most central character in the novel. When waiting at the port of Algeciras in 2018, he is in his early fifties. He is originally from Cork, Ireland. His closest friend is Charlie Redmond. Maurice and Charlie became drug dealers in the 1980s. In the 1990s, they began importing large quantities of heroin from Spain to Ireland. Maurice began to have a secret, long-term sexual relationship with a woman named Karima, who was Maurice and Charlie’s primary contact in Spain. However, Maurice was already in a long-term relationship with a woman in Ireland named Cynthia. Cynthia gave birth to her and Maurice’s daughter, Dilly, in the mid-1990s. Over the years, Maurice did his best to maintain his relationship with Cynthia and Dilly. However, his relationship with Cynthia became erratic as they both became addicted to drugs.
