Summary
At the beginning of Chapter 20, Mary returns to work at the suffrage office after the Christmas holiday. She speaks with Mr. Clacton and Mrs. Seal about how the vote for women was once again struck down by parliament. Mr. Clacton and Mrs. Seal tell Mary that they have to keep working and take their enemy by surprise. Mary wonders how Mrs. Seal manages to keep working so hard on the campaign as a single, working woman. Mary goes for a walk and tries to understand whether she would be happy in marriage or not. She thinks of Ralph, and decides that she cannot be angry with him. When she returns to the office, Mrs. Seal notices how young Mary is and worries that she may get married after all.
