Summary
Chapter 10 begins with a description of Ralph Denham as a lawyer, and the narrator explains that most of the men in his office do not really care for him due to his pride. One afternoon, while Ralph is meeting with another lawyer on business, he notices Katherine Hilbery walk past him but does not stop her. This encounter continues to bother him as he leaves the meeting, and he decides to go to visit Mary Datchet. The two friends discuss politics and the professional options available to women, and Ralph criticizes Mary for not reading enough poetry and for being too concerned with details to ever make real progress with the suffragist movement. Denham leaves soon after, and Mary, alone, reflects on what love means and whether she may really be in love with Ralph Denham.
