Summary
Elisa’s world has changed in the blink of an eye, in the stroke of midnight announcing the new year. Batista is gone, and men are marching toward Havana. Through all of the bad news for her family, she is hopeful to hear from Pablo or Alejandro. Around them is pandemonium. Workers strike, the city celebrates, but Miramar is fearfully quiet. Elisa feels nauseated and cooped up, and she gets dressed to leave the house when Magda catches her and says she can’t go outside. When Magda asks why Elisa wants to leave, she finally admits that she wants to see Pablo. She only tells Magda that she has a friend who fought in Santa Clara, and Magda is immediately concerned.
