Summary
In the clear light of day, Elisa is surprised at her actions of the night before. Now, she is going to meet Pablo at the Malecón, one of her favorite parts of Havana. It is a long stretch of seawall that is a perfect place to be during the sunset across the water. Looking out over the water is Pablo, waiting for her. Immediately, her pulse quickens, and she is overcome when she sees he is waiting with a white silk rose. The two greet each other and begin to walk along the shore in silence. They are quiet, but the two are watching each other’s every move, as the air around them “crackles with energy” (64). Pablo says that he saw her in the paper that morning, in the society pages.
