Annie
The main character of the novel, Annie is primarily identified by her scarred hand and turbulent life. Growing up, she suffered emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her father and was then left to be raised by a single mother. While these experiences were traumatizing, she also took a back seat to her mother's romances, eventually becoming involved in an accident that severed and scarred her hand. All of these experiences were overwhelming for a child, and so Annie internalized the negative feelings, becoming emotionally distant from everyone around her. Her plight was further made difficult by her mother's attempts to control every aspect of her life, along with the bullying she faced at school for her hand.
