Preface Summary
In a brief glimpse into the climax of the book, Bella expresses her urgency to get to a clock tower before high noon. The danger of not reaching her destination before the clock strikes twelve could be catastrophic, unless she can somehow make her presence known before the unthinkable happens. She compares the desperate event to a dream, in which nothing moves at the necessary pace. Bella knows something more deadly awaits. She is racing to save a life. Or rather, many lives, including her own.
