Summary
In Chapter 7, Jordan’s grandfather, who has just moved to a new senior living facility, takes Jordan to eat at a Chinese restaurant. They talk about the changes in their lives. Gran’pa tells Jordan the other residents call him “the new kid” (111) there. Jordan is embarrassed to tell his grandfather that Liam, one of the boys to which he is closest at the new school, is White. He explains he likes Liam because they have similar interests. Jordan says he also likes Drew. When Gran’pa asks if they all get along well, Jordan explains they have never all hung out together. Jordan is not sure why.
Jordan’s grandfather uses a metaphor comparing Jordan’s changing tastes in Chinese food to his friends, to suggest that Jordan does not have to limit himself to just one favorite friend or hang out...
