Newark
Newark is the most populous city in the state of New Jersey. It is the birthplace of author Philip Roth, and it serves as the setting for many of his novels. Newark is the setting for the first half of Nemesis. Eugene “Bucky” Cantor is a native of Newark, as is his long-term-girlfriend-turned-fiancée, Marcia Steinberg. In 1944, there is a major polio epidemic in the United States, and many cases of polio occur in Newark. That summer, Cantor works as a summer gym teacher in Newark and attempts to protect his students from polio while also preventing widespread panic among the students and their parents. However, Cantor eventually leaves Newark to work at a summer camp with his fiancée Marcia.
