Summary
Before Cantor and Marcia leave the island, Marcia says that she prayed to God for Cantor’s protection. They quickly devolve into an argument, with Cantor supporting the idea that because God allows bad things like polio to happen, it’s not worth praying to such a God. However, they do not want to argue, and so they stop. As Cantor lies in his bed at the camp that night, he realizes that his agitation on the island was due to his guilt of fleeing Newark rather than staying and trying to help in some way regarding the polio epidemic. However, he feels if he returns to Newark, it will hurt Marcia. Bucky calms himself and even has fun at the camp the next day.
