Summary

As Chapter Thirty-One begins, Mikko and Chan are practicing on their own. Mikko keeps looking for Young, but Chan says she is probably practicing with the band. They talk about how demanding Abogee is, and how sneaky Chan is for spending time with Rainey’s family. Their conversation is interrupted by the sound of sirens, and they finish their practice. That night, the family becomes increasingly worried as Young becomes later and later for dinner. A policeman arrives, with news that Young is dead. “Someone was yelling, screaming. There was the sound of things breaking. Make them stop, I was thinking” (187). Chan is slapped into relative calmness by Abogee. O-Ma and Mrs. Knutson are in shock. Chan keeps telling himself that he is going to context the referee’s call. “It was the only way I had,” he says in narration...
