Summary
When Joana is a child, she goes shopping with her aunt, and her aunt catches her stealing a book. Joana’s aunt is incredibly distraught by the incident, first pleading with Joana that she does not do it again. Then, later, Joana can hear her aunt talking to her uncle, Alberto, in great distress, saying that she does not know how to handle Joana and her behavior.
Joana then has a discussion with her teacher in his house. (This is a different teacher as the teacher described in 21-22, as that teacher is female, while this teacher is male.) They talk for most of the afternoon, with the teacher asking deep questions that stretch Joana’s mind, as she realizes she has not defined for herself a number of important things, such as how to judge right and wrong.
