Structure
This collection of nine non-fiction essays is structured in threes: it is broken into three parts, and each part contains three essays. Each section explores a distinct theme, but all the themes come together under the thematic umbrellas that the book’s title suggests; they are about Crucet’s time among white people and about her ongoing education. The first part is titled Early Encounters, and features an essay about going to college, about the American Dream, and about Disney World. The common theme in this section is that they explore the vision of white Americana that Crucet was brought up to strive for, through her early encounters with white people and dominant popular culture.
