Point of View

This story is told from the point of view of a third person omniscient narrator. The narrator is omniscient because he knows about the things that have happened to Dawit even back in 1540 when he underwent the Ritual of Life at Khaldun's hands. All characters are referred to by the personal pronouns he or she in the expository passages of the story, showing that none of the characters is acting as narrator.

The action of the story is told mainly from the point of view of main characters Dawit and Jessica. The story is told through the thoughts of each of these characters as well as through their dialogue. Although other characters aren't given as much emphasis as Jessica and Dawit, these other characters also help to tell the story.
