Part 5, Chapters 62 and 63 Summary

On New Year's Eve several years later, Dawit travels to a children's clinic run by Americans. He asks for Jessica but the lady at the desk tells him only Doctor Alex is there. When he tells the woman that he is Jessica's husband, he sees surprise, as well as reverence in her eyes. She calls a boy to take David to the house. Children play and laugh in the yard of the house. There is a man on the front porch whom David recognizes as Randall Gaines. Gaines takes David inside the house. A toddler who has cut her finger runs into their path. David forgets about the child when he sees a shadow at the top of the stairway. When she sees David, Jessica turns around and goes back to her room. Gaines sends David upstairs after her...
