Lagos
Lagos is the most populous city in Nigeria. The entirety of the novel takes place in Lagos. Korede and her family live in Lagos, and Korede works at a hospital in Lagos. With this specific setting, the novel seeks to interrogate patriarchal social structures that often characterize African cultures, as well as other cultures. For example, the many abuses wrought by Korede’s father were protected and enabled by the unjust patriarchal privileges granted to him.
