Grief
Rose's death has a huge impact on the Matthews family. Jamie's father drowns himself in vodka because he cannot deal with the absence of his daughter and the finality of death. Jamie's father spends a great deal of time denying Rose's death by bringing food and other items to Rose's urn, making the family pretend she is still alive and an active member of the family.
