Chapters 1-6 Summary
In Chapter 1, Jamie Matthews has a sister named Rose who died five years ago from a terrorist's bomb. Part of the pieces recovered at the sight of the bombing was cremated and sit on the family mantelpiece. Jamie does not remember Rose well because he was only five when she died. Jamie's parents think it is odd that he never cried, but Jamie does not. A few weeks ago, Jamie's mother left the family to live with a man she met in a support group. The man, Nigel, lost his wife the day of the bombing. Now Jamie, his sister Jas, and his father have moved to the country to escape the overwhelming number of Muslims in the city and so his father can get a new job.
