The Hammock

The hammock is a symbol of Cat's London dreams being disillusioned. She keeps all of her possessions, including her clothes, in a hammock that hangs above her bed because she does not have any other space to keep her things in. The hammock falls on her head right as Biddy asks her to come back home to work at the glamping site. In the beginning of the story, the hammock is a sign of Cat's poverty and the extreme conditions she is willing to live in to be able to be a true Londoner. When she moves back to her hometown, she gets rid of the hammock and is able to spread out and relax. Once she returns to London, triumphant and with a great job, she no longer has to use the hammock.
