Summary

In Chapter 1, Cat commutes across London to work at Cooper Clemmow, a branding and strategy agency. She goes into the elevator, but then her boss, Demeter, tells her to hold it for her. The narrative then breaks off and Cat tells us about Demeter’s fabulous life. Demeter is forty-five, married, has two children, and is the creative director of the agency. Cat says she is not jealous, she just wants to be like Demeter when she is older. Cat moved to London after college because she loves the city and she does not want to be a country girl, though the decision caused tension between her and her father.
